Vaccines

Preventive vaccines against cervical cancer

Cervical cancer is the second most widely spread cancer type among women all over the world. It has been proved that 99.7 % of cervical cancer cases are caused by human papilloma virus (hereinafter - HPV).

During any period of life, up to 80 % of women can catch a virus causing cervical cancer. Any woman, regardless of her age or heredity, can be taken ill with cervical cancer.

Either of two types of vaccines, protecting from HPV type viruses, is available at Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Centre: Silgard (Merck Sharp & Dohme) and Cervarix (GlaxoSmithKline).

Vaccines protecting from HPV are a possibility to reduce the probability of falling ill with cervical cancer in future. Nevertheless, one must remember that inoculation does not substitute a regular cervical cancer prevention program.
