Each year, about one million new cases of breast cancer are registered worldwide. In Lithuania, over the last three decades, the occurrence of breast cancer has increased by two-and-a-half times. Regular examination will help diagnose the disease early on and start treatment quickly. In its early stages, breast cancer can be cured entirely.

Two tests are important when diagnosing breast diseases – ultrasound and mammography.

According to the 2013 standard of breast cancer diagnostics followed by breast disease specialists all over the world, mammography should be carried out for women over the age of 30 only when an attending physician suspects a malignant breast disease. From 40, these tests should be performed regularly.

Breast ultrasound is the first-choice examination for young women aged 20 to 30 when it is necessary to establish whether any doubtful formations have developed in the breasts.

When is it recommended to have a breast ultrasound carried out?

  • when planning pregnancy
  • when starting to take or taking contraceptives or replacement hormone therapy over a long period
  • before breast plastic surgery, and afterwards when the test helps to assess the condition of breast implants
  • in case of benign breast diseases (e.g., cysts)
  • for revision following a mammography, to assess the axillary lymph nodes

All women should have a test carried out once a year even if they do not have any complaints and regularly examine their breasts themselves by palpation. Keep in mind that quite often the disease starts quietly.

Thanks to breast ultrasound, 87% of changes are established, whereas the combination of mammography and ultrasound helps in identifying up to 100% of them.

The tests are carried out by sonographers and/or mammologists.
The test takes about 15 to 30 minutes to perform and the results are issued immediately after the test.
The test is painless and requires no special preparation.
