Prostate ultrasound is a quick, reliable, and painless examination using high-frequency sound waves. It is perfectly safe.

The examination is carried out in the cases of a prostate nodule, urinary orerectile dysfunction, painful intercourse, elevated blood PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels, blood in urine or semen.

Prostate ultrasound examination helps determine the following pathological changes:

  • testicle pathology;
  • problems of blood flow in penile blood vessels;
  • prostate pathology (benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate adenoma, cancer);
  • prostate inflammation (prostatitis);
  • infertility.

Ultrasound is also used to obtain a biopsy (a sample of tissue) for closer examination, if needed.
The examination can be transabdominal (the probe is put on the abdomen below the belly button) or transrectal (the probe is inserted into the rectum).
During the transabdominal examination, some specialised jelly is applied to the skin on the area being examined. The jelly prevents air pockets from forming between the patient’s skin and the ultrasound transducer. This allows a higher resolution image to be displayed onto the computer screen.

Transrectal examination is more accurate and informative, but may cause more discomfort.
The examination is performed by an ultrasound technician or a urologist.

The exam takes from 15 to 30 min.
Results are available immediately after scanning.
No special preparation is required for this examination.
