Gastroscopy is the examination of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. This is very informative examination in the diagnostics of oesophageal diseases (erosion of oesophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease), diseases of stomach and duodenum (ulcer disease, polyps, and tumours).  A biopsy sample can be taken during the examination as well as it can be used to stop bleeding or for polyp resection.

Good to know

Sedation can be applied (sedative medicines administered) during all endoscopy procedures (except rectoscopy), considering patient’s health status and preference. A physician anaesthesiologist reanimatologist monitors the course of examination and patient does not experience any discomfort.

It is important to know:

If you plan several gastrointestinal examinations during a single visit, we recommend to have gastroscopy after echoscopic examination of abdominal organs; this is needed to avoid the substances used during gastroscopy interfering with the accurate assessment of abdominal organs during echoscopic examination 
The examination can be done for adults and children above 4 years of age.
Duration of the examination – 30-60 min.

After the examination

You can experience discomfort in your throat and oesophagus, which usually disappear with 1-2 hours after the examination.
If the examination was carried out under anaesthesia you will experience signs that are characteristic for anaesthesia (light drowsiness, dizziness).
It is not recommended to eat about 1 hour after the examination. Drinking of water in small sips is allowed.
