Potassium ensures normal response of nerve and muscle cells to an external stimulus and normal transmission of nerve impulses. Extracellular potassium plays an important role in normal carbohydrate and protein metabolism. A healthy person’s body keeps a constant concentration level of potassium in the blood serum. If there are changes in potassium balance, normal function of the heart, kidneys, muscles, and the nervous and digestive systems may be hindered.

The potassium test is usually prescribed in order to assess electrolyte balance and for patients who have cardiovascular diseases or kidney failure.

You do not have to schedule an appointment in advance, you can simply check in at reception and request to be tested.

Why it is worth

To be examined at our Centre?

  • We perform high quality tests which has been confirmed by the ISO 15189 certification of our laboratory.
  • The test results will be available within 1-2 hours for the main tests and for other tests it will be available within 1 day, except for the cases when a technological process (e.g., time needed for a culture to grow) makes it impossible.
  • The results of the tests performed in our laboratory are explained by our staff, a service that is provided by only a few laboratories in the country.
  • We can do additional tests, if needed, from the same blood sample taken up to 7 days previously.
  • There is no risk of damage or mix-up of test samples during transportation.
  • You may stay anonymous.

Good to know

Potassium deficiency is usually experienced by people who fast, engage in intense physical activity or hard physical labour.

Potassium screening is recommended for patients who have or have had kidney diseases (kidneys are the main organs that maintain potassium balance), gastrointestinal or cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, take insulin, diuretics, or laxatives.

  • overall weakness and fatigue
  • mood swings
  • muscle weakness
  • leg cramps
  • constipation
  • high heart rate

Scientific research shows that long-term or pronounced potassium deficiency in the body is the most harmful for cardiovascular patients, as their heart rhythm may become dangerously erratic.

Chronic diseases, such as diabetes, acute or chronic kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, arterial hypertension, chronic heart failure, taking medication that increases potassium levels, hypovolemia – these are some of the most common causes of increased levels of potassium in the blood. Potassium excess may be due to excessive potassium intake, impaired renal potassium excretion, renal insufficiency, taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, diabetes, ureteral obstruction, or adrenalin sufficiency.

  • The report with the test results will be prepared in 2-3 hours.
It can be picked up at the reception or we can send it via email at your request.
  • Unsure how to interpret the results? Call the lab, phone: (8 5) 247 64 17.

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

It is usually recommended that the level of sodium is tested in addition to checking the level of potassium.

If an increased blood concentration of potassium is suspected or diagnosed, additional sodium, magnesium, calcium, creatinine, urea, glucose, troponin, and creatin kinase tests are recommended.
