Potassium (K)
Potassium ensures normal response of nerve and muscle cells to an external stimulus and normal transmission of nerve impulses. Extracellular potassium plays an important role in normal carbohydrate and protein metabolism. A healthy person’s body keeps a constant concentration level of potassium in the blood serum. If there are changes in potassium balance, normal function of the heart, kidneys, muscles, and the nervous and digestive systems may be hindered.
The potassium test is usually prescribed in order to assess electrolyte balance and for patients who have cardiovascular diseases or kidney failure.
