Vitamin D (D2+D3) is involved in growth processes and is necessary to maintain the immune system and physical stability.

It has been shown that vitamin D improves the assimilation of calcium, helps maintain healthy bones, protects against bone density reduction, enhances immunity, alleviates the inflammatory processes, reduces the risk of renal, cardiac and autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and cancer, and protects against depression.

Prior registration is not required; upon arrival, please go straight to reception.

Why it is worth

To be examined at our Centre?

  • The laboratory is accredited with the ISO 15189 standard, thus you can be confident that your tests will be performed to the highest quality
  • You will find out the results of the main tests within 1–2 hours and the rest within 1 day, except in cases where this is impossible due to the technological process (e. g. time it takes for a culture to grow).
  • The results of the tests carried will be explained by our laboratory specialists. This service is only offered by a few laboratories in the country.
  • If required, we can perform further tests using the same sample of blood, for up to 7 days after the sampling.
  • No danger of damaging or mixing up the test samples due to transportation.
  • Tests can be carried out anonymously.

Good to know

Vitamin D test is recommended for everybody who does not taken vitamin D supplements altogether or takes them in certain periods to establish the dose accurately.

After you start taking vitamin D supplements, it is recommended that you have a follow-up vitamin D test after1 month to determine whether the body is assimilating the supplement and that you are taking the correct dose. Another follow-test might be carried out in 3-4 months.

  • weakness;
  • nausea;
  • sleepiness or irritability;
  • muscle pains;
  • appetite disorders.

The symptoms of vitamin D deficiency and excess can be very similar, and the vitamin D test is therefore the main tool for determining a deficiency or excess.
Vitamin D excess is often determined for young children and babies, because its supplements are prescribed from the very first weeks. However, excess vitamin D is a much rarer problem than a deficiency in it.

Skin, liver, kidneys, enzymes and vitamin D receptors are all involved in the vitamin D activation and assimilation process. If there are any disorders in any of these chain links, large doses of vitamin D will not give the expected effect, because it will not be present in its active form, which affects the processes in the body, or the body will be unable to assimilate it.

Is has been shown that long-term and significant vitamin D deficiency may affect the development of numerous diseases, including:

  • rickets;
  • osteoporosis;
  • osteoarthritis;
  • rheumatoid arthritis;
  • fibromyalgia;
  • renal insufficiency;
  • diabetes mellitus;
  • obesity;
  • cardiovascular diseases;
  • asthma;
  • depression;
  • dementia;
  • Parkinson’s disease;
  • Alzheimer’s;
  • psoriasis;
  • pregnancy complications;
  • infectious diseases;
  • cancer (breast, prostate, large intestine, skin etc. – more than ten types of cancer).

It should be noted that overdosing of vitamin D might be toxic and stones might form leading to renal damage.

  • Your test results will be ready within 1 working day.
    You can pick them up at the reception or, if you wish, we will email them.
  • For an explanation of test results, you should call the laboratory tel. (+370) 247 64 17.

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

Natural sources of vitamin D 3 include oily fish (especially cod liver oil, swordfish, salmon etc.), beef liver, milk and dairy products, eggs, and Japanese shiitake mushrooms. Foods of plant origin contain vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). It is eliminated from the body faster, but is good for vegetarians, vegans and premature babies.

The body can get up to 10–15 % of its vitamin D from food. The rest is assimilated from cholesterol, or from exposure of the skin to the sun (UVB). You can get the required weekly dose of vitamin D within 2–3 days if you spend at least 15 minutes between noon and 3pm outside on a sunny day without sunscreen or a hat and with at least half of your body uncovered.

It is difficult for most people in Lithuania to get the required amount of vitamin D naturally. Consequently, vitamin D supplements should be taken regularly, except in the period when people really spend a lot of time in the open air and can enjoy sunbaths. It is worth knowing that for elderly people the natural process of vitamin D production in skin cells is disturbed and ultimately stops altogether. For this reason, people above 65 (in certain countries, above 50) are recommended to take vitamin D supplements regularly.

It is better to take vitamin supplements daily or weekly. Large single doses may be prescribed by a doctor only, after assessing a person’s state of health.
