Travel vaccines

In order to avoid serious infectious diseases while travelling, getting vaccinated or taking prophylactic medication, for example, for malaria prevention, is recommended.

Experienced infectious diseases doctors at the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Centre evaluate all risk factors of the trip and the traveller’s overall health and design an optimal infectious disease protection plan.

As sufficient immunity develops only some time after vaccination, patients should make an appointment at a health facility at least 4-6 weeks before their departure. An immunoprophylaxis recommendation is based on the following factors:

the country or countries the patient is travelling to;

  • the type of trip;

  • living conditions at the country;

  • the duration of the trip;

  • the purpose of the trip;

  • the overall health and age of the traveller;

  • previous prophylactic vaccinations.

If the person is going to some African or South American countries where there is a risk of contracting yellow fever, vaccination is obligatory.
If the person is going on a trip where there are no opportunities to follow hygiene practices, vaccination against typhoid fever and hepatitis A and B is recommended.
If the person is going on a trip during an epidemic period of some infections, it is recommended that the persons gets vaccinated against:

  • meningococcal infection (going to Africa, Saudi Arabia);
  • flu (for persons in the risk group);

  • tick-borne encephalitis in the spring-early autumn period (going to Austria, Czechia, Hungary, the Baltic countries, Russia).

If there is a chance that the patient may be in contact with animals during the trip, vaccination against rabies is recommended.

The immunity that most of these vaccines help develop lasts 10 years. After that, revaccination is needed. Timely revaccination protects against the following diseases spread around the world: tetanus, whooping cough, measles, diphtheria. It is worth knowing that in some Asian and African countries poliomyelitis has not been eradicated yet.

All vaccinations have to be registered in the international vaccination passport, which is issued by our Centre after a vaccination.

In the age of globalization, when migration is becoming a mass phenomenon, diseases, as well as people, migrate, disregarding state borders. Get vaccinated in time! Protect yourself!
