Endocrinology, thyroid diseases

The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped endocrine gland, which produces thyroid hormones. If it is not functioning correctly, the gland produces either too small or too large amounts of the hormones – leading to manifestation of adverse effects or disease development. The thyroid gland is responsible for the functions of the cardiovascular system, functions of the nervous system, skin condition, blood cholesterol level, bone strength, activity of the intestines, kidneys and reproductive system. Disorders of the thyroid gland function result in disturbed sleep, skin fading and a frayed nervous system.

The most common diseases and illnesses: Diabetes mellitus, increased thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), Hashimoto disease, graves-basedow disease, goitre, cretinism, mixedema,  thyroiditis, thyrotoxicosis, Addison's disease, acromegaly (pituitary gigantism), pituitary nanism (dwarfism).

Treatment. In the Centre we provide consultations and treat ALL thyroid diseases in children and adults, disorders of endocrine gland functions and carry out biopsies and examinations of the thyroid gland. In many cases thyroid diseases can be treated with medication; in case of disease progression or in case of advanced disease stages, the patient is referred for treatment with radioactive iodine or thyroid surgery.

Thyroid diseases are the most widespread diseases in the world, as well as in Lithuania. Usually thyroid diseases develop without any clearly manifested symptoms; therefore, everyone should undergo yearly prophylactic examinations, especially if there is a tendency for these diseases in the family.

We can usually diagnose the disease and prescribe treatment on the same day.*
* In some cases further tests may be required to get a final diagnosis. In such cases you will be informed by the treating physician or medical staff responsible for the examination.

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

Contact an endocrinologist, if:
  • you have been diagnosed with thyroid diseases or diabetes mellitus,
  • diseases of the adrenal glands, parathyroid glands, pituitary gland, sex glands or other even more rare disorders have been suspected or diagnosed,
  • you are coughing up blood, you are hoarse or your voice has altered, you experience difficulty swallowing without any reason,
  • You experience neck tightness, so called goitre or neck nodules develop,
  • you suffer from irregular blood pressure, increased heart rate, tremor of the hands and body,
  • increased sensitivity, irritability, frequent mood springs, or you think you may be depressed,
  • you are sensitive to cold, hot flushes and increased sweating (which is easy to confuse with pre-menopause symptoms),
  • Your skin and hair are dry, pustules and skin pigmentation occur,
  • you experience permanent fatigue and drowsiness,
  • you lose or gain weight for no apparent reason,
  • you notice a discharge from the nipples (applicable both for males and females),
  • you experience increased hairiness and disorder of the menstrual cycle,
  • reduced sexual activity, or erection – in males,
  • increased blood cholesterol level,
  • altered blood potassium, sodium and calcium levels,
  • you have developed osteoporosis.

The abovementioned symptoms are also characteristic of other diseases, therefore only a physician can make an accurate diagnosis as to whether these alterations are associated with thyroid disorders after evaluation of the test results.

The earlier treatment begins the shorter and less complicated it will be.

The physician will first listen to your complaints and examine you to find out if your thyroid gland or lymph nodes are enlarged. The tests prescribed will aim to establish the exact diagnosis and the results will be evaluated. And finally, the physician will discuss potential treatment methods, prescribed medicines and procedures with you. If surgery or chemotherapy is required, the physician will refer you to a healthcare establishment where these services are available.

Thyroid disorders can be triggered by maturation, pregnancy, breast feeding, hormone changes before pre-menopause, the long-term use of contraceptives, stress, inappropriate nutrition.

Do not delay. Take care of yourself
