Cataract surgery

Regain your vision

Surgery is the only way to cure a cataract. Research shows that 95 percent of patients who have a cataract removed, i.e. a clouded lens replaced with a new one, have their vision restored by between 50 and 100 percent, if there are no other eye diseases. The earlier the cataract surgery is done, the more effective it is.

The cataract surgery at our centre uses the most advanced technology – phacoemulsification, with a modern ultrasound device. Surgeries performed with this tool are safe – the aspiration process of the clouded lens stops automatically after the lens is removed, and the eye tissues remain unharmed. Therefore, patients heal fast and their vision is restored incredibly quickly – already next day after the surgery.

We can operate on the same day the patient arrives, if all the required examination and tests are done, and it is safe to operate. You can go home on the same or next day after the surgery, once the doctor has examined you.

Vision is regained immediately, and fully stabilizes within 2-4 weeks after the surgery.

If you have been diagnosed with a cataract, do not delay! The uncomplicated surgery will restore life colours and help to avoid complicated treatment when it is delayed.

What you should know about cataract surgery?

Before cataract surgery, your general health condition must be assessed and laboratory tests must be carried out. You will then have a consultation with the doctor, who will evaluate the test results, your general condition and make preparations for the surgery.

You should arrive at the centre on the assigned date and hour without eating for at least 4 hours and without drinking for at least for 3 hours before the surgery.

  • Take a shower and wash your hair the day before the surgery
  • Do not use any cosmetics or makeup, spirit or aerosol products on the day of the surgery.
  • Have a person accompany you on the day of the surgery.
  • If due to unforeseen circumstances you cannot come on the assigned date or your health situation changes after your last consultation with the doctor, please inform the doctor or the staff at the centre at least three days before the surgery.
Tests required before the surgery:

General blood test;
Blood coagulation test (aPTT);
Glucose test;
electrocardiogram (ECG) with evaluation;

Patients can bring their test records from other healthcare institutions, or they may have them done at the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Centre. The tests take 2 hrs. Prices of the tests performed at the Centre. The tests must be performed no earlier than 14 days before the surgery.

At the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Centre cataract surgery is performed in the most advanced way – phacoemulsification.

Alcon Infiniti (the USA) – the most modern cataract removal ultrasound device is used for the surgery. The clouded eye’s lens is crushed by ultrasound inside the eye and removed via a tiny (1.5–2.4 mm) incision, and a transparent artificial lens is inserted to replace the removed lens.

The surgery is carried out under local anaesthesia, therefore the patient is awake, but does not feel any pain. It takes from 20-45 minutes. If cataract surgery has been delayed for some reason or is complicated – about an hour.

Patients can go home on the same day 1-2 hours after the surgery. The bandage is removed on the day following surgery and vision is much improved. Eye drops must be used for several weeks following the surgery, and the vision gradually improves.

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

You will see better than before immediately after the surgery, but some colours may be not bright enough. It takes time for your eyes to adapt to each other. You will need to use eye drops prescribed by the doctor for several weeks after the surgery, and the vision will gradually improve, within 2-6 weeks the vision will finally stabilise.

You will have to visit the doctor who carried out the surgery for prescription of treatment with eye drops on the day following the surgery. Usually, the drops have to be used for 6 weeks.

If you experience any unpleasant feelings during this period, consult the eye doctor immediately. As with any other surgery there is a small risk of complications with cataract surgery. Your doctor will discuss this with you. If you have no problems after the surgery there is no need to visit the doctor.

It is a mistake to delay and lose the vision completely. Firstly, bad vision increases the risk of trauma. Besides, if surgery is delayed, the cataract matures and becomes “hard”, therefore technically it is more difficult to carry out the surgery, and the risk of surgical and post-surgical complications is higher. A more or less developed cataract is possible to diagnose for almost 70 percent of 65-75 year olds. However, not all of them suffer from vision impairment. You should have your eyes and vision checked at least once per year. If your doctor recommends having cataract surgery you should not delay. If the cataract, progresses there is a risk that the intraocular pressure might increase, resulting in glaucoma.

If you suspect that you may have a cataract, our doctors will examine your eyes and vision with modern equipment and prescribe the most suitable treatment. If needed, experienced eye micro-surgeons will immediately perform not only cataract surgery, but also any other eye surgeries required, and you will be free of all the inconveniences of poor vision.

The patient can choose what type of replacement lens they want: hard or soft. During the consultation, the doctor will explain the choices available and will recommend the one most suitable for you. Usually, our patients choose to implant the high quality, worldwide popular Alcon soft foldable intraocular lenses. The patient can also choose the newest, so-called pseudoaccommodation lenses that ensure good vision after the surgery not only of objects faraway, but also near pbjects. The patient with such lenses will not need eyeglasses after the surgery.

All the mentioned Alcon soft foldable lenses filter UV rays and protect the retina of the eye from harmful impact of blue light rays.

Advantages of soft foldable lenses:

•   no need to suture the wound,
•   lower risk of post-surgical complications,
•    faster healing,
•    better vision.

The eye tolerates the soft lens better than the hard lens, and rejection reactions are rarer.

It is also important to note that secondary cataract is more frequent with the hard lens, therefore, the vision may worsen again several years after the surgery.

The soft lens ensures a better quality of life.
