The adenoids are lymphatic tissue in the nasopharynx, that usually form in children. Adenoids are a child’s local immune system protecting the organism against viruses and bacteria. The adenoids can become enlarged due to frequent colds, inflammation, and allergies etc. and cause the following symptoms and health complaints: difficulty breathing through the nose (the child always has their mouth open), snoring, development of abnormal bite, recurrent ear infections, hearing impairment, speech development disorder.

Treatment: the ENT (ear, nose, and throat) doctor at our Centre will decide on a course of treatment depending on how enlarged the adenoids are– medication (antihistamines or homeopathic medication for nose) or surgery where the disease has progressed and the adenoids are considerably enlarged.
Before recommending the most suitable treatment, the ENT doctor will inspect your nasal cavity from inside with a video camera, i.e. perform nose and throat fiberoptic endoscopy.

After the surgery: patients can usually go home on the day of the surgery. You should follow the doctors recommendations in the 2-week period after surgery in order to have a full recovery.
It takes approximately 2 weeks after the adenoid surgery for the tissue to stop swelling, and the patient then feels much better.

More about the time required for the tests

Before the surgery, the patient must be in excellent health – must not have a cold.

Adenoid removal surgery (adenoidectomy) is performed under general anaesthesia (using a mouth gag). Adenoids are removed with a special instrument – as if wiped from nasopharynx walls. Sometimes the wound edges are cauterised. During an adenotonsillectomy, the adenoids and part of the tonsils are removed. This is one of the most common surgeries performed by ENT doctors.

Children usually recover within several hours after the procedure.

Duration – about 1 hour, including preparation (the surgery takes about 15–20 min.).
Time in hospital – up to 1 day. Usually you can go home on the same day.

If you come from abroad for the surgery, we recommend that you stay in Lithuania for up to 3 days (if possible) in order to medical help immediately, for example, in case of excessive bleeding.

Doctors at our Centre recommend the following:

  • An hour after the surgery, the patient can start drinking plain non-carbonated water.
  • Have a light snack a couple of hours after the surgery (yogurt, curd, soup, porridge).
  • Eat as usual in the following days but avoid hot food and carbonated drinks.
  • During the first 10 days after surgery it is recommended that you stay at home, avoid physical activity, not take hot baths, sauna, or direct sunshine (because of the risk of bleeding).
  • Children usually recover within several hours after the surgery, mostly without any complaints, but if there is pain, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen suspension) are recommended.
  • The body temperature may rise to 37.5 °C in the week after the surgery. If the fever is higher, you must see a doctor.
  • For the first 2 weeks after the surgery it is recommended that you: stay home. Avoid travelling, long flights, avoid hot premises (sauna, hot baths, solarium, swimming pool). Eat mild, soft, blended, cool food, avoid hot or carbonated drinks.

Frequently asked questions

As with every surgery, there is a risk of complications, usually bleeding, but this is very rare and there is no reason to be frightened before the procedure. Global statistics show that only 1 per cent of patients experience bleeding after surgery. However, should there be bleeding from the mouth, severe pain which does not respond to normal painkillers, a fever above 38 C or restricted neck movement (if you can only turn your head to one side), you should see a doctor.

Adenoid surgeries are performed only when they are necessary. Timely surgery can essentially change not only the patient’s – especially a child’s – but also the whole family’s life. Good quality breathing is restored, sleep is calm again, no more snoring. Thus, there is no need to fear the surgery.

Adenoids grow on the pharynx walls. Therefore, theoretically, they can grow back. This is particularly true if the adenoidectomy is performed on 2-3-year olds or on those with allergic rhinitis. It is however, rare. The surgery is performed only when conservative treatment fails, and the intervention is the only way to improve the patient’s quality of life and to prevent long-lasting hearing impairment, adenoid face etc.
