Germany’s prestigious TEMOS accreditation is based on the highest quality standards and is an exclusive acknowledgement of the quality of service at the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Center

At the end of June, the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Center was re-accredited according to the standards of TEMOS, an international organization that represents ‘Trust Effective Medicine and Optimized Services’. It embodies the concepts of Quality in International Patient Care as well as Excellence in Medical Tourism. These standards are based on Germany’s highest aviation standards, developed and adapted for medical institutions seeking maximum quality and safety in attending and providing healthcare services to residents and other patients.

This international accreditation has been given to the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Center – the only medical institution in north-eastern Europe, referred to by patients as Grybo Centras, to receive it, as a result of long-term input in improving the quality of service and achieving exclusive results. The TEMOS certificates were given to the Center for the first time in 2015.

TEMOS experts and evaluators Dr Constanze Trammer and Dr Rainer Hilgenfeld highly commended the efforts and innovations that the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Center has implemented over the last three years in improving quality in developing services for international patients. “This hospital is a great asset for Lithuania, and you offer excellent medical services. Moreover, we have seen state-of-the-art equipment here, which is better than in other hospitals we have visited in recent years,” said Dr Rainer Hilgenfeld.

This international accreditation of a healthcare institution is an evidence-based acknowledgement by a company accredited by another state that the institution meets the highest standards of healthcare, patient care and safety, medical technology and management. TEMOS, an independent certification body for medical institutions based in Germany, assesses healthcare facilities through the prism of the quality and safety of medical services and international patient care.

Dr Constanze Trammer noted that the highest standards are applied throughout the entire cycle of medical treatment for patients at the institution, including for medical tourists – from the first contact and provision of information about the services to diagnosis, treatment and feedback after the patient returns to his or her home country. It is very important to avoid linguistic misunderstandings while serving foreign patients, so the managers who plan the treatment of a foreign patient for an optimal time at the Center period play a critical role.

The staff at the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Center are dedicated to trust and quality because they are aware that the highest quality of medical services and treatment, and patient safety, are of key importance when it comes to what is most valuable to people – their health – while prompt service is of the highest value as it saves one of the most priceless human resources – time. So, having focused on the main goal – to provide patients with the highest-quality safe services as promptly as possible without making them wait in lines or queues – the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Center has been travelling on a road to exceptional high quality in its second decade and has been awarded these national and international accreditations:

  • 2004 – the MDTC was one of the first medical institutions in Lithuania certified in accordance with the international ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental) standards.
  • 2011 – the MDTC became the first medical institution in Lithuania accredited according to the ISO 15189 international medical laboratories standard.
  • 2012 – the MDTC became the first medical institution in the Baltic countries accredited by the United Kingdom’s TAA (Treatment Abroad Accredited) TA Code of Practice standard for medical tourism.
  • 2015 – the MDTC became the first medical institution in the Baltic and Nordic region certified by two international German TEMOS (Trust. Effective Medicine. Optimized Services) medical tourism standards: Excellence in Medical Tourism and Quality in International Patient Care, re-certified in 2018.
  • In 2015, the Center was one of the first in the Baltic countries to be accredited by the internationally acclaimed (gold) JCI (Joint Commission International) Hospital Standard from the USA, the world’s so-called Golden Health Standard – the highest international acknowledgement.
  • In 2016, the Center was awarded the Diplomatic Council (Germany) quality certificate and status as a recognized partner, and based on this the Center’s services are recommended by the staff of international organizations, consulates and embassies.

The Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Center treats over 40,000 patients every year, 10% of whom come from abroad. During the period 2015-2017, the flow of medical tourists through the Center increased by 28%, most of them seeking complex differential diagnostics, a full health examination and the determination of health conditions along with the services of a second doctor’s opinion and various types of surgeries. Patients have come to the Center from all over the world, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Latvia, Russia, even Australia and the USA. The Center pays equal attention to every individual and applies the same standards of diagnostics, treatment and care for patients from Lithuania and abroad. The Center’s employees believe that medicine has no borders and each and every patient is an individual with the right to choose and who can promptly receive individualized, top-quality medical care and attention.
